Cardinals Rewrite Record Books at GVSU Big Meet

ALLENDALE, MICH. - The Saginaw Valley State University Track & Field teams traveled to Kelly Family Sports center to compete at the GVSU Big Meet on Friday, February 10th and 11th. The two-day meet consisted of multiple teams across all divisions of the NCAA.

 

Day one of the meet was one for the record books. Three runners for SVSU broke school records. Lauren Buckner celebrated her birthday running 4:50.02 in the one-mile finals for the Cardinals breaking the previous school record while finishing fifth overall in the event. Alexa Keiser competed in the 3000m run and conquered another school record that she fell only two-tenths of a second short of two weeks ago. Keiser ran 9:37.49 placing her seventh overall in the race, but first all time in the SVSU record books. Nathan Furst competed in the 60m hurdles and fell just one-one hundreth of a second short of the school record in the preliminary race but was able to best the mark in the finals running 8.06 to post himself as the best in school history.

 

Day two of Big Meet was highlighted by the Saginaw Valley 'A' Team in the distance medley relay. The team of Lauren Buckner, Cassandra Campbell, Karissa Picard, and Alexa Keiser posted an impressive time of 11:40.32 to take third overall, besting multiple division one programs in the event. Kelsey Landra also had a great day for the Cardinals jumping into a tied-fifth position in the Long Jump with a leap of 5.26m. Rounding out the day for SVSU was Kabani Witherspoon finishing sixth in the 200m dash finals in 22.29 seconds.
