Cardinals Track and Field Completes Strong Showing in First Meet of New Year

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Saginaw Valley State University track & field team competed in its first meet of the 2023 season on Friday, January 13th.

The men's and women's 4x400 relay A-teams capped off the meet with first-place times of 3 minutes and 22.06 seconds and 4:01.37, respectively. The men's team consisted of Cole Lewis, Ryan Mixon, Evan Green, and Kabanu Witherspoon. The wowomen'seam consisted of Cassie Campbell. Taylor Moyer, Trinity Greer, and Kelsey Landra.

Thomas Hufton and Anna Alexander finished top five in the 3000-meter run for the Cardinals. Thomas Hufton won the men's race with a time of 8:25.93, and Anna Alexander finished fifth with a time of 11:01.62. Hufton is looking to build on a strong showing this fall for the Cardinals"cross country team.

Hanna Schroeder set a new personal record in the 60-meter hurdles posting a 9.01 seconds time for the cardinals, while Nathan Furst finished third for the men with a time of 8.38 seconds.

Senior MacKenzie Ramey placed first for the cardinals in the shot put with a throw of 13.55 meters and third in the weight throw with a 14.88-meter toss. She picks up her first win of the 2022-23 season. On thmen's's side, Junior Clarence Corbett set a new season record in the weight throw with a heave of 16.53 meters which placed him second. Sophomore Nolan Berg tied for second place with a throw of 14.43 meters in the shot put.

Freshman Wilson Tschirhart set a new personal record in the pole vault and tied for the win with a height of 4.10 meters. Wilson improved over his previous personal best of 3.95 meters set at the SVSU Holiday Open and Multis meet in December.

The SVSU track and field team will return to action next week Friday, January 20th for the Doug Hansen Open at the SVSU Fieldhouse/Hansen Indoor Track.
