Cardinal Swim & Dive Finish Fifth at GLIAC Championships

HOLLAND, Mich. – The long four-day event at the Holland Aquatic Center has finally concluded. The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving program finished fifth in both the men's and women's side along with their overall combined scores at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships.

The final day showcased five more NCAA B cut finishes for the men's team. The final event of the evening was the 400-yard free relay where Alejandro Robles Ruiz, Logan Fox, Eric Slabbert, and Almos Szedlak finished second with a time of two minutes and 57.17 seconds, which was 2.1 seconds ahead of the B cut time.

Robles Ruiz had another second-place finish. This time in the 200-yard backstroke with a mark of 1:46.09. Slabbert also competed in the 200-yard backstroke and had a time of 1:47.34. Both of the times were good for a B cut finish.

Fox took third in the 100-yard freestyle as he finished in 44.79 seconds, yet another B cut time. The final B cut finish for the Cardinals was Benjamin Wainman in the 1650-yard freestyle. Wainman completed the event in 15:39.38, nearly 21 seconds ahead of the time to beat.

The final scores for SVSU swimming and diving after the last day at the GLIAC Championships were 301 points for the women, 403.5 for the men, with a combined score of 704.5. The Cardinals were 59.5 points back of fourth place behind Davenport University.

With the GLIAC Championships over, the program waits to see if any athletes qualify for the NCAA DII National Championships. Those events will take place March 7-11 in Indianapolis, Ind.
