Cardinals Compete in First Day of GLIAC Championships

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving program had its first day of GLIAC Championships on Wednesday in Holland as the four-day meet is hosted by Davenport University, Grand Valley State University, and Northern Michigan University. Both programs scored 55 points through 11 events. The women sit in fifth place and the men are in sixth and as a team is in sixth place.

Some top performers for the women were Flora Mia Szklenar who just missed out on the NCAA B cut time in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of two minutes and 7.13 seconds, just 1.34 seconds short. The four-person team of Erin McDowell, Kiersten Stoddard, Ella Yantz, and Szklenar was 3.38 seconds off the B cut time of the 200-yard medley relay finishing in 1:46.27.

For the men, Almos Szedlak hit the NCAA B cut time for the 200-yard individual medley finishing in 1:50.37. He was 0.85 seconds ahead of the time to beat. Benjamin Wainman also hit a B cut time. He completed the 1000-yard freestyle in 9:22.75. The time to beat was 9:31.67. Logan Fox barely missed the B cut time of 20.61 seconds on the 50-yard freestyle as he finished in 20.74 seconds.

SVSU swimming and diving have three more GLIAC Championship days ahead of them in Holland as they will compete Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
