Nationally-Ranked Cardinals Feature at Don Kimble Invitational

KENTWOOD, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's swimming and diving programs competed in a highly-competitive Don Kimble Invitational hosted by Davenport University over the weekend at the Kentwood Aquatic Center.

The three-day second annual event featured six opponents, including five nationally ranked for both the men and women, as the No. 15 SVSU men finished in second place of six schools with 1006 points and the 24th-rated Cardinals women were fourth of seventh teams with 591 points.

Men's Highlights

  • Saginaw Valley established a plethora of NCAA marks and 11 school records.
  • The 200-yard freestyle relay produced a NCAA provisional, school-record time of 1 minute and 20.63 seconds. The quartet included Almos Szedlak, Josh Rottier, Logan Fox and Alejandro Robles Ruiz.
  • The 400-medley relay of Eric Slabbert, Christian Rottier, Fox and Szedlak turned in a school record with a 3:19.50 time for third place.
  • Ben Wainmen produced a pair of school records that included an NCAA B-cut in the 1650-free at 15:46.27 for second place. He also had a 9:30.07 clocking in the 1000-free.
  • Szedlak swam to a couple NCAA B-cut performances including a school-record 4:29.18 time in the 500-free for second place and a 1:38.13 in the 200-free for first place over teammate Fox.
  • The 800-free relay posted a school record in 6:37.98, which was good for another victory. Robles Ruiz, Fox, Henry Booker and Szedlak comprised the squad.
  • Robles-Ruiz won the 200-backstroke in 1:46.73, captured the 100-back in record-setting form in 48.33 seconds, and was second in the 100-butterfly in 47.84 for another school benchmark. He achieved NCAA B-cut status in all three of those events.
  • Slabbert had two NCAA B-cut showings in the 200-individual medley in 1:51.04 for first place and a school record, and in the 200-back in 1:48.60 for second place.
  • Rodrigo Vargas recorded a school record of 1:50.51 in the 200-fly for second place.
  • Christian Rottier swam a NCAA B-cut in the 100-breastroke to finish in 54.99 for second place.
  • Fox turned in NCAA B-cut times in the 100-free (45.03) and 200-free (1:38.68). He was the runner-up in both races.
  • The 200-medley relay of Robles Ruiz, Christian Rottier, Fox and Szedlak registered a school record in 1:28.61 for first place.
  • No. 18-ranked Wayne State University won the event with 1012 points while No. 22 and host Panthers were third with 780.

Women's Highlights

  • Erin McDowell, Grace Charnstrom, Flora Szklenar and Andrea Bustos teamed up for the 400-medley relay to end up in third place with a 3:52.76 time.
  • McDowell was second in the 200-back in 2:05.34.
  • She also started the 200-medley relay with Kiersten Stoddard, Szklenar and Ella Yantz, who claimed third place in 1:46.76.
  • Fourteenth-ranked Wayne State won the team title with 1171 points.

The Cardinals will take a break for fall semester exams and the holiday season. They will be back in action in 2023 on Saturday, Jan. 7, at Wayne State. The dual meet starts at 1 p.m.
