SVSU Competes in Busy Weekend at Northern Michigan University

MARQUETTE, Mich.--The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving programs competed at Northern Michigan University this weekend. Today, the Cardinals fell in a double-dual to the host Wildcats on the women's side, 224-76 and on the men's, 151-143; and to Grand Valley State University by scores of 179-115 for the men and 248-52 for the women. Last night, the Cardinals were swept by the Wildcats by scores of 135-120 for the men and 148-106 on the women's side.

Saturday's Men's Highlights:

  • The 200-yard medley relay team—senior Alejandro Robles Ruiz, junior Christian Rottier, sophomore Logan Fox and freshman Almos Szedlak--broke the facility record with a winning time of 1 minute and 31.86 seconds.
  • Robles Ruiz also was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly in 49.89 and he placed second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:40.39.
  • In addition,  Robles Ruiz and sophomore Eric Slabbert finished one-two in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:51.15 and 1:51.72, respectively.
  • Slabbert also was the runner-up in the 100-back in 51.95.
  • Rottier was the 100-yard breaststroke winner in 57.12.
  • Freshman Rory Kauffman tallied 281.20 in 3-meter diving for second plae.
  • Szedlak also was a double-winner in the 500-free in an NCAA B-cut time of 4:34.18 and 200-yard individual medley in 1:54.36.

Saturday's Women's Highlights:

  • Senior Adelaide Spencer had 397.35 points for third place in the 1-meter diving event, making the NCAA B-cut.

Friday's Women's Highlights:

  • Spencer lost for the first time this season in 1-meter diving with a second-place point total of 231.14, but remained unbeaten in the 3-meter event with 397.26 points.
  • In that latter event, freshman Cailey Mills was runner-up to her teammate with 343.94 points.
  • Sophomore Grace Charnstrom captured the 25-breast in 14.33.
  • Freshman Andrea Bustos won the 175-free in 1:40.92, and was runner-up in the 75-free in 39.35.

Friday's Men's Highlights:

  • Szedlak took first place in the 175-free in 1:28.05.
  • Robles Ruiz touched the wall first in the 25-back (11.22) as well as the 75-back (36.83).
  • Rottier also was a double winner in the 25-breast (11.81) and 75-breast (41.00).
  • Cardinals occupied the top three spots in the 75-free including Szedlak (33.29), Fox (34.85) and sophomore Gavin Crews (35.08).
  • SVSU also claimed the top three positions in the 125-IM in the form of Fox (1:05.89), Szedlak (1:06.75) and Slabbert (1:06.83).

The Cardinals will be idle from competition until Friday, Nov. 18, when they travel for the three-day Davenport University Invitational at East Kentwood High School.
