Cardinals Battle Findlay Oilers on the Road

FINDLAY, Ohio--The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving programs ventured on the road for the first time this season on Saturday, but the Cardinals also experienced defeat for the first time in 2022-23. Host University of Findlay snuck a 126-113 women's victory and prevailed 132-99 on the men's side.

 Women's Highlights:

  • Adelaide Spencer led the Cardinals with a pair of diving titles in 1- and 3-meters with 255.50 and 294.08, respectively. Both of those performances are season highs as Spencer has not lost in either event in the current campaign.
  • Andrea Bustos captured first place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5 minutes and 17.86 seconds. She also placed runner-up in both the 100-free (54.24 seconds) and 200-free (1:56.34).
  • The 200-medley relay squad came in second place in 1:50.36—just 1.10 seconds off the pace.
  • Sierra Maison (200-individual medley, 2:13.25) and Lucia Engle-Wilkerson (1000-free, 11:01.97) also were winners. The latter also picked up a third-place showing in the 500-free in 5:21.43.
  • Flora Szklenar was the runner-up in both the 100-butterfly (59.50) and 200-IM (2:14.96).
  • Kaylee Smith also earned a couple second-place finishes in 1-meter diving (247.60) and 3-meter diving (260.10).

Men's Highlights:

  • Almos Szedlak was victorious in the 200-free in 1:41.89 and was second in the 100-free in 45.87.
  • Alejandro Robles Ruiz touched the wall first in the 100-backstroke with a 50.41 clocking, while earning second place in the 50-free in 20.94.
  • Rory Kauffman won the 3-meter diving event with 318.30 points and was second place in 1-meter diving.
  • Fellow diver Sam Hudgens claimed first place in the 1-meter event with 266.60 points and trailed just Kauffman in 3-meters with 293.93.
  • Matteo Capotosti turned in a runner-up performance in the 500-free with a time of 4:49.18 and was third in the 1000-free (9:58.41).
  • Logan Fox swam in 1:42.46 to take second place in the 200-free and was third in the 100-fly (52.21).
  • Eric Slabbert posted a 1:56.84 time in the 200-IM for second place and took third in the 100-back (52.82).

Next up, the Cardinals will be in Michigan's U.P. next weekend with a trip to Marquette where they will race against host Northern Michigan University on Friday (5 p.m.) and compete against the Wildcats and Grand Valley State University the next day (12:30 p.m.).
