Cardinals sweep season opening tri-meet at Gerstacker

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.--The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving programs started the 2022-23 campaign on Saturday by sweeping visiting Alma College and Kalamazoo College in a tri-meet at the Gerstacker Regional Aquatic Center. The Cardinals throttled the Scot men 242-43 and the women 251-41, and stung the Hornet men 231-69 and women 242-43.

Women's Highlights:

  • The 200-yard medley relay "B" squad of Erin McDowell, Kiersten Stoddard, Kaylene Darbee and Ella Yantz won in 1 minute and 49.54 seconds.
  • Yantz also took first place in the 50-freestyle with a clocking of 25.08 seconds.
  • In diving, Adelaide Spencer swept titles in the 1- and 3-meters with 234.25 and 231.95, respectively.
  • Andrea Bustos swam to victories in the 200-free (1:56.62), 100-free (53.70) and 500-free (5:14.31).
  • Sierra Maison was victorious in the 100-fly (59.79) and 200-individual medley (2:12.91).
  • Also finding the win column for the Cardinals were Lucy Engle-Wilkerson in the 1000-free in 11:00.38, Grace Charnstrom in the 100-breaststroke in 1:09.32, Flora Szklenar in the 200-butterfly in 2:12.64, and Meghan Cimini in the 200-breast in 2:35.22.
  • In the last event, the 200-free relay "A" team of Yantz, Veronica Markwood, Stoddard and McDowell triumphed in 1:40.93.

Men's Highlights:

  • The A-quartet of Alejandro Robles Ruiz, Christian Rottier, Almos Szdelak and Josh Rottier captured first place in the 200-medley relay at 1:31.95.
  • Rory Kauffman was a double-winner in 1-meter diving (241.85) as well as 3-meter (257.90).
  • Benjamin Wainman claimed first place in both the 1000-free in 9:52.91 and 500-free in  4:49.91.
  • Szdelak took home a couple wins in the 200-free (1:41.04) and 100-free (45.67).
  • Robles Ruiz took a couple first places in the 100-backstroke (51.34) and 200-back (1:50.18).
  • Also picking up victories for the Cardinals were Christian Rottier in the 100-breast (57.91).
  • Josh Rottier in the 200-breast (2:13.24), Eric Slabber in the 200-IM (1:58.22), Rodrigo Vargas in the 200-fly (1:58.98), Logan Fox in the 50-free (21.15) and Joao Pedro Nogueira in the 100-fly (52.61).
  • In the final event, the 200-free "A" relay of Robles Ruiz, Szdelak, Fox and Josh Rottier touched the finish line with a top time of 1:23.11.
