UNIVERSITY CENTER, MICH. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team dropped both games against Purdue Northwest in Monday morning's GLIAC doubleheader. The Cardinals (20-12, 7-3 GLIAC) came up short in both games by a score of 2-1 in two eight-inning outings for the afternoon.
GAME ONE – PNW 2 – SVSU 1 (8 Innings)
Emily Depew got the start for the Cardinals in game one. She sat down three Pride batters before being pulled after 2.1 innings of play. Aalana Kimble (L, 5-3) relieved Depew and pitched the remaining 5.2 innings. She recorded three strikeouts and gave up the one run that proved the difference in the game.
Sara Moos brought the lone runner to the plate with a sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom half of the first inning that scored Ella Reifschneider. Reifschneider was given first base on a catcher's interference. A rare play that happened three times in the afternoon (all to Reifschneider).
PNW knotted things up in the top of the third with a hit-by-pitch with the bases-loaded scored a run. The Pride tallied the game-winning run in the top of the eighth with an RBI single.
Kimble recorded a double for her base hit of game one. Maddie Campagna and Sydney Herioux tallied a single for the other two hits in the opening contest for the Cardinals.
GAME TWO – PNW 2 – SVSU 1 (8 Innings)
Alyssa Muench got the nod in the circle for game two. She went 4.2 innings with seven strikeouts and two earned runs in the contest. Kimble (L, 5-4) pitched another 3.1 innings in game two. She recorded three more Ks in the losing effort for SVSU.
Muench singled in the bottom of the first to bring Reifschneider home for the 1-0 lead early in game two.
A two-run home run by PNW in the third inning flipped the advantage to 2-1 in favor of the visitors.
Kimble helped her own cause with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh that brought Herioux across the plate and forced extra innings.
An error by the Cardinals gave a run to the Pride in the top half of the eighth inning and SVSU fell short in the bottom half inning rally.
Mya Purdy recorded two hits in her four appearances in game two to lead the Cardinals offensively. Muench finished 1-for-4 with an RBI. Kimble, Moos, Campagna, and Herioux recorded hits for SVSU. Moos and Herioux tallied doubles, while Muench and Kimble earned an RBI.

The SVSU softball squad will begin a three-game road trip on Wednesday, April 10, at Davenport with the first pitch scheduled for 3:00 PM EST.
