Softball Sweeps Parkside in GLIAC Home Opener

UNIVERSITY CENTER, MICH. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team swept Parkside on Friday afternoon in the team's home-opening doubleheader. The Cardinals ended game one in five innings with a 9-0 win before sealing the sweep with an 8-2 victory in game two.

GAME 1 – SVSU 9 – Parkside 0 (5 Innings)

Emily Depew (W, 8-4) got the start for the Cardinals in game one. Depew pitched all five innings and struck out eight Ranger batters while only allowing one hit in the win.

Sara Moos put SVSU up 3-0 in the first inning with a home run to left center field. Moos had an incredible performance in game one, as she went 2-for-3 with a team-high five RBI.

Maddie Campagna hit a double and scored on the following play to push the lead to 4-0. Sydney Herioux had a monster afternoon as she went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with a run and an RBI in game one. Her RBI came on her first at-bat when she singled to score Pnacek to bring the score to 5-0 after the first inning.

Campagna singled to score Mya Purdy in the second and extend the lead to 6-0. Purdy then singled to center field in the third to score Herioux. Moos ended the scoring with a single to right field that brought both Ella Reifschneider and Herioux home for the final two runs in the 9-0 win.

Six Cardinal players recorded two hits to make up the team's total of 12 in game one. Reifschneider, Purdy, Olivia Sabin, and Herioux recorded two singles. Moos had a single and a home run, while Campagna had a double and a single.

GAME 2 – SVSU 8 – Parkside 2

Alyssa Muench (W, 4-5) started in the circle for game two. She pitched 5.0 innings and struck out four strikeouts to earn her fourth win.

Herioux finished her phenomenal day as she went 3-for-3 in game two to improve to 5-for-5 for the doubleheader. Her first hit came in the bottom of the second with an RBI single that scored Leah Denome for the 1-0 lead.

Campagna doubled up the lead to 2-0 in the third with a single that scored Marissa Beck.

The Rangers knotted things up in the fourth with two runs off a single in the top half of the inning. Herioux put SVSU back on top in the bottom half with a home run that scored herself and Emma Helvie for the 4-2 lead.

Moos scored with the bases loaded in the fifth before Herioux belted a double to bring Denome and Campagna for the 7-1 edge. Herioux made it home to close the scoring in the fifth inning.

Heriuox added five RBI to her afternoon totals to lead SVSU in that category for game two. She finished the day responsible for nine Cardinal runs between the two games with six RBI and three runs.

UP NEXT

SVSU will remain at home to host Purdue Northwest on Monday, April 8. The first pitch for that doubleheader is set for 10:00 AM EST.
