UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team played its third home doubleheader of the week, taking on University of Wisconsin Parkside for two on Sunday at the SVSU Softball Complex.
Parkside rallied to take game one 6-5, while SVSU jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the second inning of game two and held the Rangers off the board for a 6-0 win. The split moves SVSU to 13-5 overall and 2-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Game one was plagued by errors on both sides, with six total unearned runs scored. SVSU took advantage early with two runs scoring on a routine popup that got caught in the windy conditions and fell to the infield. The Cardinals added a run in the third as Sarah Gersch scored after stealing third, as the attempted throw by the Ranger catcher went into the outfield allowing the run to come home.
Parkside scored three in the fourth, including two runs on a triple after an error allowed the inning to continue. SVSU jumped back in front with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, including an RBI single from Meagan VerVaecke and a solo home run from Blasia Moyler, her fifth of the season.
Parkside scored two in the fifth on a double and got the game-winning run on an error in the sixth.
Kasey Bagelmann (1-2) was charged with the loss in relief, allowing one unearned run on two hits, walking two, and striking out four over two innings.
In game two, SVSU scored five times in the second inning. Alexis Gills got the inning going with an RBI double and scored later on a single from Moyler. Sabrina Sage, Julia Salisbury, and Leah Denome each added an RBI in the second.
The game was without another run until Sage picked up an RBI in the 6th.
Julia Mundy (5-1) got the complete-game shutout win on the mound. She went all seven innings, allowing two hits and four walks while striking out 13 batters, a career-high for the sophomore.
The Cardinals hit the road for the first time in GLIAC play to take on Northwood University at 3 pm Tuesday in Midland, Mich.
