CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team hit the road for the team's final two doubleheaders before the start of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season, opening the weekend with two games at Cedarville University Friday in Cedarville, Ohio.

The offense was held in check in the opener, as SVSU fell 7-1. The Cardinals regrouped and behind a complete-game shutout from Julia Mundy, SVSU earned a split with a 3-0 victory.

The split moves SVSU's overall record to 9-2 this season.

In the opener, the Cardinals were held to three hits, while CU built a 7-0 lead with three in the fifth and four in the sixth. SVSU got on the board in the seventh with an RBI triple from Sara Moos.

Alyssa Muench took the loss on the mound in relief, allowing three unearned runs on three hits in 2.1 innings.

With game two scoreless through three, SVSU broke through with a run in the fourth on an RBI single from Julia Salisbury. Meagan VerVaecke added an RBI single in the sixth, followed by an RBI single from Jessica Kreuzer in the seventh.

The run support was more than enough for Mundy, who went all seven innings, scattering seven hits, walking two, and striking out six to improve to 3-0 on the mound this season.

The Cardinals travel to the University of Findlay for a doubleheader starting at 1 pm Saturday in Findlay, Ohio.
