Cardinals Advance to GLIAC Finals

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer program squared off against the GLIAC regular season champions in Parkside Saturday afternoon for their GLIAC semifinal match. After a hard fought 110 minutes, the match went to penalty kicks tied 2-2. Both teams scored four of their first five attempts with Jack Simms stopping the sixth shot by Parkside and Jayden Cameron scoring the deciding goal.

The Rangers got the early lead with a corner kick in the ninth minute of play. A header from the corner gave Parkside a 1-0 lead. They continued to put on the offensive pressure as they led in shots 5-0. Late in the first half, the Cardinals broke through to tie the game. Nnolim put in a cross from the right side that found Benjamin Adamson in the box. His right foot struck the ball out of the air and past the goalkeeper to knot the game at 1-1.

Out of the halftime break, SVSU jumped out front. Alex Demorow blocked a clearing attempt to open up a 2-on-1 opportunity and fed Jason Squeo on the far side of the box for the easy tap in for the 2-1 advantage. The lead lasted 11 minutes when Parkside took advantage of another corner to tie the match 2-2 with 29:45 remaining in regulation. As time ticked away, the yellow cards started to fly as both teams played hard to break the tie. The tie wouldn't break and after 90 minutes, they needed 20 more.

Both teams had chances off free kicks in the two halves of overtime, but neither could take the lead. After the extra 20 minutes, the match came down to penalty kicks for the second straight time for Saginaw Valley. Parkside shot first and took the 1-0 advantage. SVSU missed their first kick wide right giving UWP the upper hand. The Rangers doubled the lead 2-0 with another goal before Joshua Rubin scored his penalty kick chance. Simms picked the team up with a save on the third shot he faced. Squeo tied the PK up 2-2 netting the Cardinals third shot. Both teams scored their fourth and fifth opportunities with goals coming from Adamson and Donna Kheswa for the Cardinals to force a sixth round. Simms made a second save and Cameron capitalized on the opportunity scoring the sixth shot to advance to the GLIAC finals.

The Cardinals face the winner of the two-seed Purdue Northwest and three-seed Davenport who play Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM. The finals match is still to be scheduled but will be hosted by the higher seed on Saturday, November 11 or Sunday, November 12.
