Four SVSU Men’s Soccer Players Named United Soccer Coaches All-Region

KANSAS CITY – The United Soccer Coaches announced the NCAA Division II Men's soccer all-region teams on Tuesday afternoon. Benjamin Adamson, Robbie Baker, Phila Dlamini, and Johnathan Monney were listed on the first-team All-Midwest Region team.

Adamson also returns to the first-team All-Midwest Region after earning the honor last season. He tallied a career-high three goals this season, including a game-winning score in the 3-0 win over Tiffin. His six points were the second-most points among defenders on the team and matched his career-high set just a season ago.

"Ben Adamson did not put a foot wrong this season, anchoring the back line," said SVSU head men's soccer coach Louis Barrow. "He was stellar in his leadership and was key in our success. He contributed offensively also with three goals, including a stunning bicycle kick away at St Cloud."

Baker is also a returner on the United Coaches All-Region team, as he was named to the second-team All-Midwest Region in 2021. He completed the 2022 campaign as the Cardinals' best playmaker and led the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) with six assists on the season (those six dishes were also a career-high for the junior defenseman). In addition, he added one goal to his scoring line to total eight points.

"Robbie Baker continued his SVSU career this year with his steadfast approach," said Barrow. "He has been a special student-athlete in his time with the Cards. He led the conference in assists from center back and was integral in our defensive line."

Dlamini had a knack for making plays when SVSU needed them most this season, as he tallied four assists on the year as a midfielder. Two of his assists came on go-ahead goals that helped maintain the Cardinals' undefeated season record.

"Phila Dlamini came in this season as a new player in our program. His impact was immediate," added coach Barrow. "The way he ran games for us was vital to the success of our season. He adapted to the college game immediately and propelled SVSU back to the top of the GLIAC."

Monney finished his debut season with SVSU leading the GLIAC with 16 goals, six game-winning scores, and 37 points. He was second in assists behind teammate Robbie Baker and second in shots with 52. The Kitchener, Ontario native tied for fourth in NCAA Division II stats for game-winning goals, sixth in goals, and eighth in total points.

"Jonny Monney came into SVSU this season as a new player also. He immediately put himself on the map as he was within the top three goal scorers in the nation for Division II at about halfway through the season. He contributed to our successes massively this season, as scoring goals is the hardest thing to do," said Barrow.
