No. 4 Cardinals handle Panthers 2-0 on the road

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The No. 4 Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team entered the final weekend of the regular season looking to close out the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship.

SVSU traveled to Davenport University for a road matchup on Friday in Caledonia, Mich. After a scoreless first half, the Cardinals found a pair of goals after the break and the SVSU defense stifled the Panthers for a 2-0 win.

The victory pushes SVSU to 11-0-4 overall and 8-0-3 in the GLIAC, clinching at least a share of the GLIAC title. The Cardinals will clinch the outright GLIAC Championship with one loss by Wisconsin Parkside in its final three games, or no worse than a tie by SVSU in the regular season finale at Purdue Northwest on Sunday.,

Against the Panthers, Cody Miller got the scoring going for the Cardinals with his third of the season in the 53rd minute. The assist on the goal went to Jayden Cameron. SVSU doubled its lead with the 15th goal of the season from Jonathan Monney in the 78th minute on an assist from Shiekh Manneh. Monney leads the GLIAC in goals scored and is second in NCAA DII.

The Cardinal defense was led by four saves from Nick Kay in net in the win. SVSU outshot Davenport 9-7, while Davenport held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

The regular season finale for SVSU takes place against PNW at 12 pm on Sunday in Hammond, Ind.
