Strong First Half Propels Nationally-Ranked Cardinals Over Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, Iowa--The nationally-ranked Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to 14 games on Sunday with a 2-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory on the road against Upper Iowa University at Harms-Eischeid Stadium.

The Cardinals, who are slotted fifth in the recent United Soccer Coaches Top 25 NCAA Division II poll, improve to 10-0-4 this fall, including 7-0-3 in the GLIAC. Upper Iowa falls to 1-11-2 overall and 0-8-1 in the conference.

Saginaw Valley got off to a blazing start as Jason Squeo found the back of the net just 57 seconds after the opening kickoff.

Jonathan Monney scored his GLIAC-leading 14th goal in the 23rd minute to give the Cardinals some insurance and a 2-0 advantage. Anthony Waller was credit with an assist on the play to create a three-way tie for the team lead in that category.

Nick Kay backstopped the win with two saves, while Archie Watts made five saves to keep UIU close.

The Cardinals had the Peacocks on their heels all day long by outshooting the hosts 16-6, including 8-3 in shots on goal. SVSU also had five of the game's eight corner kicks.

The Peacocks spoiled the shutout bid in the 72nd minute on a goal from Leart Wunsch. He was assisted by Jonathan Bayer.

Saginaw Valley closes out the regular season with GLIAC road dates at Davenport and Purdue Northwest on Friday (1:30 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.), respectively.
