No. 4 SVSU plays to 1-1 draw with No. 23 Parkside

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team earned a second straight tie against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at home on Friday.

After No. 23 Parkside went ahead in the second minute of play, the No. 4 Cardinals found the equalizer early in the second half. The tie moves SVSU to 8-0-3 overall and 5-0-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Cardinals are one full game up in the standings over Parkside (7-2-2, 4-1-2 GLIAC) through seven games.

The Rangers got the scoring started early, with Edgar Heredia scoring 97 seconds into the contest, with the assist going to Tode Atlija. The goal was the first that SVSU goalkeeper Nick Kay has let up this season, snapping a shutout streak of 361 minutes.

The score remained the same into the break, despite SVSU registering 10 shots in the first half. The Cardinals found the equalizer on the 11th goal of the season from Jonathan Monney in the 54th minute with an assist from Phila Dlamini.

Kay stood tall the rest of the way for the Cardinals in net, making six saves in the draw. SVSU led in total shots 17-14 and in corner kicks 4-3.

The Cardinals remain home to host Northern Michigan University for Senior Day at 12 pm on Sunday. The game is scheduled to be played on Braddock Field for the first time in 2022.
