Cardinals hold off Pride 3-1 to win GLIAC opener

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The No. 13-ranked Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team used a quick start to beat visiting Purdue Northwest, 3-1, in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener on Friday at SVSU IM Field.

Saginaw Valley moved to 4-0-1 overall while Purdue Northwest remains winless in five starts (0-3-2, 0-1-0).

How it Happened:

  • The Cardinals jumped on the Pride with a pair of goals 1 minute and 41 seconds apart. In the 2nd minute, Benjamin Adamson scored his second goal of the season on a pass from Jordan Murray. Then in the 4th, reigning GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week Jonathan Monney notched his conference-leading sixth goal.
  • Lucas Bravo Olle tallied an unassisted goal in the 36th minute to cut SVSU's lead in half, 2-1.
  • In the 71st minute, Shiekh Manneh connected with Brady Walker for the latter's second goal to give SVSU some insurance and a two-goal advantage.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Like last season, SVSU is nationally ranked in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II poll during the month of September.
  • SVSU had a commanding lead in shots, 14-4. The Cardinals also doubled up the Pride in corner kicks, 5-2.
  • The teams combined for 33 fouls and six cards.
  • SVSU hasn't lost a home game since Sept. 19, going 6-0-3 in a nine-game span since that date.
  • Monney leads the Cardinals with six goals and 13 points.
