Fast start leads SVSU to GLIAC opening win over NMU

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team opened the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season strong with a convincing win over Northern Michigan University Friday at Braddock Field.

The Cardinals scored all the game's goals in the opening 22 minutes and cruised to the 3-0 victory over the Wildcats. The win moves SVSU to 4-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the GLIAC.

Danny Barlow opened the scoring with his third of the season, putting a cross from Robbie Baker in the back of the net in the sixth minute. Alex Gloshen scored his first of the season with a brilliant volley past the outstretched arm of the Wildcat goalkeeper. Baker and Benjamin Adamson picked up the assists in the Gloshen goal.

Brady Walker gave the Cardinals complete control when he scored his fourth of the year after NMU misplayed a ball around the box.

Mason Maziasz kept a clean sheet with three saves in net for SVSU to earn the win and improve to 2-1-0 this season. The total shots were even for the two teams at 12-12.

The Cardinals remain home for an early GLIAC test against the University of Wisconsin Parkside at 1 pm Sunday at Braddock Field.
