Cardinals roll to 7-1 win over Pioneers

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team scored four times in the opening 19 minutes of a one-sided win over Malone University Tuesday at Braddock Field in University Center, Mich.

The Cardinals added three more goals in a span of fewer than three minutes midway through the second half to cruise to a 7-1 win over the Pioneers. The win moves SVSU to 2-0-0 to start the season.

Brady Walker got the scoring started on a goal in the ninth minute on the first of three assists in the game for Robbie Bruce. The lead was doubled in the 14th minute on the first goal of the season from reigning Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year Danny Barlow with Walker getting the assist.

Newly crowned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week Benjamin Adamson drove home a header on a corner kick in the 16th minute from Bruce, who scored his second goal of the season three minutes later.

After Malone got on the board with a penalty kick in the 57th minute, SVSU answered with a flurry of goals just minutes later. The run started with the second goal of the season from Robbie Baker, while Johannes Jeske assisted on a pair of goals from Barlow and Walker.

Callum Harley got the start in the net and earned the win, making one save for the Cardinals. The game was called in the 84th minute due to severe weather around the SVSU campus.

The Cardinals hit the road for the first time in 2021 with a pair of games at Tiffin University starting against the Dragons at 2:30 pm Friday in Tiffin, Ohio.
