Cardinals shutout Warriors for season-opening win

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team opened the 2021 season with a matchup against Rochester University Friday at Braddock Field in University Center, Mich.

The Cardinals scored three times in the first half and cruised to a 4-0 win over the Warriors (NAIA). The victory starts the season at 1-0-0 for the defending Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions.

Johannes Jeske wasted little time getting his career started for SVSU with a goal in the 13th minute. Jeske found the back end of a cross from Brady Walker and headed the ball into the net for the game's opening goal. The Cardinals extended their lead to 2-0 on a header from Benjamin Adamson, on an assist from Robbie Bruce.

The scoring continued in the first half for SVSU with a goal from Cody Miller assisted by Alex Gloshen. Robbie Bruce netted his first of the season midway through the second half as the Cardinal pulled away. Joshua Rubin picked up the assist on Bruce's goal.

SVSU outshot Rochester 22-7, while Cardinal goalkeeper Mason Maziasz stopped two shots for the shutout win.

The Cardinals remain home to host Malone University at 1 pm Tuesday at Braddock Field.
