Defending Champion Cardinals Open 2021 Regular Season Friday

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team's 2021 spring season was exciting from start to finish. The Cardinals went perfect in the regular season, including four consecutive overtime victories, winning the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference regular-season title for the fifth time, and finishing with a record of 8-1-0 after falling 1-0 to Ashland University in the conference tournament semifinals.

SVSU returns nearly all of its starters from the spring, as the Cardinals look to stay at the top of the standings while working to capture an elusive GLIAC Tournament title.

GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year Danny Barlow returns for his senior season after finishing second in the nation in goals in the spring with 10 in nine games. Robbie Bruce will captain the Cardinals this season after a strong spring season.

GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year Robbie Baker rejoins Benjamin Adamson to lead the SVSU defense this season after the team allowed just seven goals in nine games in the spring. Mason Maziasz will be back in net for the Cardinals for his senior year, after recording five shutouts for SVSU in the spring, allowing just 0.78 goals per game.

The GLIAC coaches picked SVSU to repeat as champions for the 2021 season, with the Cardinals earning five of the eight first-place votes. SVSU opens the regular season at home against Rochester University at 4 pm Friday, Sept. 3 at Braddock Field.

All SVSU students who attend the first half of any of the games listed below will receive a complimentary SVSU Cardinals dri-fit t-shirt and SVSU face-covering (while supplies last). Items will be distributed at half-time on the lawn inside the gates of the outdoor athletic complex and between the football stadium and soccer fields.
