Cardinals Fall to Huskies in Houghton

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team fell 75-67 to Michigan Tech up in Houghton on Saturday evening. The Cardinals fall back to 6-6 in conference play to hold onto sixth in the standings.

Tre Garrett led SVSU with 20 points and six rebounds. It is the sixth time this season that Garrett has scored 20+ points in a game. Jiovanni Miles tallied 14 points on 4-6 shooting. Maurice Barnett scored seven points and hauled in five rebounds.

The Huskies used three shots from deep to complete a 9-0 run to hop out to an 11-2 lead in the opening five minutes of play. Miles scored the next five points to cut the deficit to 13-11 with 11:43 before the half. Ethan Hill scored the final three points in a 5-0 run that flipped the lead to SVSU, 16-14 with less than 10 minutes on the clock. The score remained close for the rest of the first half as the Huskies hit a three-point jumper at the buzzer to hold a 31-27 lead at the break.

Kevonne Taylor made the first shot of the second half to pull the Cardinals within two points of tying the game, but Michigan Tech tallied five-straight points to widen the gap to seven points. The Cardinals rallied to come within a single possession of tying the score before three-straight threes by Tech put the margin at its largest of 45-35 with 13:34 to play. Barnett netted a layup that sparked a 7-0 run to get back into the game, but Michigan Tech would do just enough to fend off SVSU.

The SVSU men's basketball squad will return to northern Michigan on Thursday, February 9, with a game against Lake Superior State. Tip-off between the Lakers and Cardinals is set for 7:30 PM.
