Cardinals Cruise to Blowout Win Over Rival Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team cruised to a 36-point victory over Northwood inside the E.W. Bennett Sports Center in Midland, Michigan on Monday afternoon. The Cardinals (6-6) scored 25 points off turnovers to earn the 77-41 decision over the Timberwolves (1-12).

Freddie McIntosh and Tre Garrett led the way for SVSU with 12 points. McIntosh finished 5-9 from the field with five assists and three rebounds. Garrett shot 4-6 and registered a team-high four steals along with four rebounds. Jiovanni Miles recorded 10 points, three steals, and two rebounds. Kevonne Taylor led all Cardinal players with seven rebounds, while Chansey Willis Jr. added seven points and a team-high five assists.

The game started slow, with Northwood pulling ahead 4-2 at the first media timeout. A 5-0 run for Saginaw Valley pushed the advantage to 7-4 with 14:10 left in the half. A three-point jumper by the Timberwolves knotted the game up for the final time before a 13-2 run resulted in a 20-11 lead for the Cardinals with 8:00 on the clock. Northwood got as close as seven points, but the Cards took it from there as they built a 37-25 advantage at the break.

The second half remained all SVSU as the Cardinals grew the lead to its peak of 40 points after a 28-0 run in the middle portion of the second. The SVSU defense held the Timberwolves to just 16 second-half points on 18.8% shooting to seal the victory.
