Wildcats start fast, top Cardinals in Marquette

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team played its final road game of the 2021-22 regular season, traveling to Northern Michigan University for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday in Marquette, Mich.

The Wildcats used strong shooting from deep in the first half to build a 24-point lead at the break. NMU continued to lead the rest of the way and topped SVSU 88-62. The loss drops the Cardinals to 17-9 overall and 11-7 in the GLIAC.

How it Happened:

  • After the Wildcats jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the opening minutes, Freddie McIntosh hit a layup to pull the Cardinals within six.
  • NMU went on a 17-2 run, hitting multiple 3-pointers to build a 31-10 advantage.
  • Delano Smith started to heat up with five quick points to stop the run, but the Wildcats kept filling the basket and led 46-22 at the half.
  • The Wildcats kept the Cardinals from making a run in the second half with continued high-percentage shooting.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Tre Garrett scored 15 points for the Cardinals, adding seven rebounds.
  • Reigning GLIAC Player of the Week Delano Smith also scored 15 points.
  • Tyler Witz narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
  • The Cardinals shot 20-of-62 from the field, 7-of-23 from deep, and 15-of-21 at the line. NMU won the rebounding battle 43-38.
  • Nick Wagner led the Wildcats with 22 points, while John Kerr added 18 points and 14 rebounds. Kerr scored his 2,000th career point in the game. The Wildcats combined for 15 made 3-pointers.
