Smith's big week leads to GLIAC award

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team has won five straight games as the Cardinals look to keep pace in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings.

SVSU has also been piling up the GLIAC South Division Player of the Week awards in 2021-22, with Delano Smith earning his second of the season for hit performances last week in a pair of home wins for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals have won six South Division Player of the Week awards this season, with Smith, Tyler Witz, and Darnell Hoskins Jr. each taking the award twice.

Smith recorded a pair of double-doubles for SVSU last week starting with 17 points and 13 rebounds in a win over Wisconsin Parkside on Thursday. He led SVSU to a win over Purdue Northwest on Saturday, scoring 14 points and pulling down 19 rebounds, just three short of the Cardinal program record for a single game.

The Novi, Mich., native is averaging 16.7 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game this season. SVSU is 17-7 overall and 11-5 in the GLIAC as the team travels to Michigan Tech for a showdown of two of the league's top teams at 7:30 pm on Thursday in Houghton, Mich.
