WEEK TWO: Cardinals hit the road for matchup with No. 25 Bowie State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The 2021 football season for Saginaw Valley State University opened under the lights against Texas A&M-Kingsville, in front of a large crowd of Cardinal supporters at Wickes Stadium on Saturday.

The Cardinals returned to the field after nearly two years and battled the Javelinas right to the end, with the SVSU defense making one of several key stops in the closing seconds to preserve a 13-9 victory.

The Cardinals were led by Tommy Scott with 12 carries for 11 yards and a touchdown, while Casey Williams caught 11 passes for 162 yards through the air. New quarterback Matt Considine was 18-of-33 passing for 236 yards in his debut.

Trevor Nowaske led the SVSU defense with 14 total tackles, including nine solo and two for a loss. Connor Luksic was named the GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week after hitting a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter and making two spectacular plays in the punting game.

The Bowie State University football team erased a 19-0 first-quarter deficit and outscored Delaware State University (NCAA DI FCS) 14-6 in the third quarter but the Bulldogs comeback came up eight points shy in a 32-24 decision last Saturday.

The meeting this weekend is the first-ever between the Cardinals and the No 25 Bulldogs.
