Cardinals Fall in Final Home Game of the Season

University Center, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University baseball wrapped up their home games for the season with a 6-1 loss against Wayne State University in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. SVSU (24-21, 14-12) had nine hits and stranded the bases loaded in the ninth as WSU (35-9, 21-5) only had four hits.

The Warriors got the 1-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly, but the Cardinals wiped it away with a run of their own in the second. Martin Money doubled and scored on the next at-bat due to a fielding error. Two more Wayne State runs crossed home plate in the third, both due to an error, before they extended their lead to 4-1 in the fourth. All four runs, only two earned, were against starter Christopher Schmees (L, 3-3).

Jackson Decker took over in relief and struck out five of the first seven batters he faced. He was set for a scoreless three innings of work before a walk and a home run, the only two batters who reached against Decker, came in the seventh to make it 6-1. Kaden Stively (W, 2-1) allowed six hits and two walks through 5 2/3 innings but stranded every runner that reached against him.

The Cardinals had chances to come back as they left 12 runners on base including two in the eighth and three in the ninth. Two singles and a walk in the final inning loaded the bases before a pitching change. David Thurman (Sv, 1) only faced one batter, which was Logan Welch, who hit a sharp liner at the Wayne State shortstop to end the game.

Tucker Roe and Austin Schweiger both had multi-hit games as Colin Cornwell, Reed Raymond, and Brandon Scheurer all had a hit and a walk. Chase Gruno pitched 1 2/3 innings after Decker allowing only one walk while Scheurer pitched the ninth and struck out one.
