SVSU Drops Final Game to Maryville

St. Louis, Miss.Saginaw Valley State University had a chance for their first series win on Sunday with the three-game series against Maryville University tied up. SVSU (2-4) had the bases loaded with two outs in the ninth but flew out to end the game losing 6-3 to Maryville (2-4).

Cardinal starter Christopher Schmees (L, 0-1) got roughed up to start with Maryville scoring three runs in the first on a three-run home run.

SVSU tallied one run in the second on a Connor McClennen bunt single and a fielding error that allowed Jaccar Watkins to score. Maryville answered back with one in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-1 Saints.

Schmees settled down and had two scoreless frames to end his four innings on the mound. He struck out five throughout his outing. Brandon Scheurer entered in relief and struck out four in three innings.

The Cardinals scored two more runs in the seventh to cut the lead to one. Connor Cornwell scored on a balk, and Colin Cornwell singled home Logan Welch. Tucker Roe rounded third and was cut down at the plate as the potential tying run leaving the Saints with a 4-3 lead. Maryville scored two of their own in the seventh on a double extending their lead to three.

Ryan Louck (W, 1-1) started for Maryville pitching five innings of one run ball. Ben Prywitch (Sv, 1) donned the mound in the sixth and allowed two unearned runs in four innings of work.

UP NEXT

SVSU drops the series 2-1 and gets ready for a nine-day trip to Florida. Starting on March 3, the Cardinals will play back-to-back doubleheaders against University of Findlay.
