SVSU Baseball Takes Opening Game in Missouri

St. Louis, Miss. – Saginaw Valley State University baseball started their second weekend on the road. This time, they were taking on Maryville University at Weber Baseball Field on Friday.

The Cardinals (2-2) got their second series opening win to start the year with a 7-2 victory over the Saints (0-4).

SVSU got the scoring started early with a run in the top of the first. Reed Raymond and Colin Cornwell both singled before Austin Schweiger drove one in for the 1-0 lead.

Tyler McLaren (W, 2-0) had another splendid outing for the Cardinals. McLaren threw five innings only allowing one run and struck out seven, putting SVSU in the position for their big sixth inning.

Maryville tied it 1-1 in the fourth, but SVSU blew the doors open with five runs in the sixth. Raymond, Cornwell, and Schweiger all reached to load the bases with two outs. Brandon Scheurer walked home a run to give SVSU the 2-1 lead. Connor McClennen singled home two more on the next at-bat. Then, back-to-back singles by Jeffery Reseigh and Jaccar Watkins scored two more making it 6-1 Saginaw Valley.

Nick Bastian took the mound in the bottom of the sixth for SVSU and pitched a scoreless 1 1/3 innings. He struck out two and didn't allow a hit before giving way to Hunter Merillat. Merillat gave up one run through 2 2/3 innings.

SVSU tallied one more run in the ninth on a Raymond ground out that scored Watkins making it 7-2.

UP NEXT

SVSU is back in action in St. Louis on Saturday with game two of the three-game series. They look for the series victory a day early with the final game on Sunday.
