Northwood pitching stifles SVSU in series opener

MIDLAND, Mich. -  The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team opened the final Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series of the season at Northwood University on Friday in Midland.

The Cardinals were held to one hit by their rivals, falling 5-2. The loss drops SVSU to 19-25 overall and 8-13 in the GLIAC.

Game Breakdown:

  • The lone Cardinal hit came in the first inning off the bat of Martin Money. SVSU got on the board on the play thanks to a Northwood throwing error.
  • Todd Paperd made it 2-0 in favor of the Cardinals later in the first on an RBI ground out.
  • Northwood answered with one in the first and two more in the third to take the lead. The Timberwolves added a run in each of the seventh and eighth innings.
  • After the Northwood starter left the game after three innings, Cam Schulke took over for the home team and no-hit the Cardinals over the final six innings.
  • Hayden Jatczak got the start for SVSU, tossing six innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits, walking four, and striking out eight.
  • Hunter Merillat pitched the final two innings for SVSU, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits, walking two, and striking out one.

The series continues with a 7/9 doubleheader starting at 1:30 pm on Saturday in Midland.
