Anthes strong showing not enough in loss to Ashland

FOUR CORNERS, Fla. -- The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to former GLIAC member Ashland University on Thursday night in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The game endured a long weather delay in the first inning, but the teams were able to get the full nine innings in. 

With the loss, the Cardinals record moves to 4-6 overall.

Game Breakdown:

  • The Eagles opened the scoring with runs in the bottom of the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead.
  • SVSU got its only run in the top of the fourth when an RBI groundout by Maven Gordon scored Martin Money
  • Ashland responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth and added another in the bottom of the eighth. 
  • The Cardinals were unable to get the offense going, as they left 10 runners on base in the game. 
  • Kendall Anthes was the starter on the mound for SVSU and took the loss, going 7.2 innings, striking out seven, allowing four runs, eight hits, and one walk. Thomas Shipley and Chase Gruno also appeared on the mound in relief for the Cardinals.

SVSU will face West Virginia Wesleyan College at 12:15 pm Friday in Florida.
