Women Take 2nd, Men Finish 3rd at GLIAC Championships

The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's cross country teams earned top-three finishes at the GLIAC Championships. The Cardinals had a total of four First-Team All-GLIAC finishers and three Second-Team All-GLIAC qualifiers. 

Women's Results: The women finished second overall with one First-Team All-GLIAC finisher, Morgan Fuerst, and three Second-Team All-GLIAC finishers: Jenna Keiser, Katelyn Spooner, and Sydney Kreger. The Cardinals scored 89 points as a team and had a team average time of 22:20.7 for the 6k race. 

  • Junior Morgan Fuerst led the Cardinals finishing first for the team crossing the line at 21:45.5, good for sixth place overall.
  • Next up was Jenna Keiser who earned a 13th place finish for SVSU and came in at 22:10.6.
  • Finishing in 15th place was sophomore Katelyn Spooner who earned a season best coming in with a final time of 22:15.1.
  • Right behind Spooner was senior Sydney Kreger who crossed the line at 22:18.7 good for 17th place
  • Rounding out the Cardinals top-five was junior Maggie Pawelczyk who finished 38th with a time of 23:13.6.

Men's Results: The men finished third overall with three First-Team All-GLIAC finishers: CarLee Stimpfel, Dayton Brown, and Ryan Talbott. The Cardinals scored 61 points as a team, just four points behind Michigan Tech who placed second, and had a team average time of 24:49.3 for the 8k race.

  • Sophomore CarLee Stimpfel finished second overall with a final time of 24:11.2, less than 20 seconds behind the first place finisher.
  • Following Stimpfel was sophomore Dayton Brown coming in with a time of 24:25.7 which was good for a third place finish.
  • Finishing eighth was sophomore Ryan Talbott who crossed the line at 24:35.7.
  • Next was freshman Sam Deardorff who timed in at 25:23.4 which was good for a 22nd place finish, just two places out of Second-Team All-GLIAC honors.
  • Rounding out the Cardinals top-five was Alex Grifka who finished with a time of 25:30.7, good for 26th overall.

The Cardinals are on the road again Saturday (Nov. 9) as they compete in the NCAA DII Midwest Regional Championships, held in Evansville, Ind., as they compete for a bid in the NCAA DII National Championships.
