Fuerst, Stimpfel sweep GLIAC Cross Country Week One Awards

GLIAC -- The Saginaw Valley State University Cross Country programs swept the first week of awards from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Both junior Morgan Fuerst and sophomore CarLee Stimpfel were named the GLIAC Cross Country Athlete of the Week after claiming victory at the 2019 Northwood Invitational on Saturday (Sep. 7) afternoon. 

Fuerst posted a five second victory to open the 2019 campaign at the Northwood University Invitational on Saturday. Fuerst claimed the top spot after registering a time of 18:17.6 in the 5K event. She paced an SVSU unit that placed four runners in the top-seven and helped the Cardinals get the victory with a tiebreaker over Northern Michigan University. 

Stimpfel opened the 2019 season with a victory at the Northwood University Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Stimpfel, a 2018 NCAA Division II All-American, posted a time of 18:24.6 in the 6K race to finish just over 22 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor. He paced the Cardinal victory in the event, with SVSU placing all runners in the top-12 and four in the top-six. 

SVSU is back in action on Friday in East Lansing, as it competes in the MSU Auto Owners Insurance Invitational.
