Volleyball Tops NMU in Five-set Comeback

Marquette, Mich. — The SVSU Volleyball team headed north for their annual U.P. trip to take on Northern Michigan Friday (Oct. 19) night. The Cardinals defeated the NMU Wildcats for the second time this season, 3-2, after previously defeating NMU when they were #22 in the nation in September.

This win puts SVSU at a 9-3 winning record in conference play, with a 16-7 overall record heading into Saturday's contest against the #24 ranked MTU Huskies.

The Match:

In set one, the NMU Wildcat offense was almost untouchable as they produced 15 kills with only two errors, while the Cards also produced 15 kills but the seven errors would cost the team in the end. Northern Michigan earned the victory, 25-23 to go up 1-0 heading into set two.

NMU would earn 14 kills in the next set while the Cardinals were held to a zero hitting percentage. Heading into the locker room break the Wildcats earned the 2-0 lead after taking down SVSU 25-19.

Although, the Cards were not willing to give up just yet — set three finally fell in SVSU's favor after a hard faught 25-23 battle led by junior Sarah Tabit who earned five kills from the outside position.

Set four was led by middles Lexi Lascowski and Rachel Eisenhour who earned three key kills each in set four to add to the total of 13 kills. Saginaw Valley defeated the Wildcats 25-21 to even out the contest 2-2.

In the final set, the teams knotted up 12-12. Luckily big kills from Lascowski and Kristen Huebner gave the Cards a win 15-13 over the Wildcats and the match, 3-2.

From head coach Will Stanton

"We started a bit slow and northern really played well and served us tough. We had some great help from the bench and we're able to make some adjustments that made a difference in the end. Our serving picked up and our passing settled down and that allowed us to attack better."

Inside the Box Score:

  • Lascowski and Eisenhour earn Player of the Match accolades after their impeccable performances off the bench for the Cardinals.
  • S. Tabit led the team with 21 kills and a season high of three aces.
