SVSU Drops 3-1 Decision to #6 Ferris State

Big Rapids, Mich. — The #7 Ferris State Bulldogs hosted the Cardinal Volleyball team Saturday afternoon in a GLIAC North Division contest. 

FSU stayed aggressive from beginning to end, defeating Saginaw Valley 3-1. SVSU falls to 10-5, 4-3 in the GLIAC to the divisons leader, while Ferris State continues on their perfect streak in conference with seven wins and an 12-3 record overall. 

The Match:

Set one was dominated by the Bulldog offense, posting 15 kills with only one error. The Cardinals struggled to find ways to score, posting a -.031 hitting percentage, giving Ferris State the victory, 25-12. 

Saginaw Valley cleaned up the net action in the second set, tying up at 7-7. SVSU pushed ahead to a six point lead at 22-16, but the Bulldogs were not ready to give up just yet. FSU outscored SVSU 7-1 in the final moments but could not hold onto the win. 

SVSU took set two, 25-23 and knotted up the contest, 1-1. 

The Cardinals continued to bring the fire in set three led by junior outside, Sarah Tabit, who totalled 14 kills at this point in the contest. Although, #6 FSU was not willing to give up just yet. 

As Saginaw Valley led 20-13, Ferris State scored seven in a row to tie the contest up. SV tried to stay on top with back-to-back S. Tabit kills, but three late SVSU errors and two FSU kills gave the close set to Ferris State, 26-24. 

The Bulldogs seemed to find their groove again in set four, as the team pushed out quickly ahead of the Cardinals, 14-7. As SVSU was only able to have the ball in their favor five more times, FSU took the win 25-14 over Saginaw Valley, and the match victory, 3-1. 

Inside the Box Score:  

  • S. Tabit hit a .262 with a team high of 17 kills against the Bulldogs, earning herself the Player of the Match honors. 
  • Hannah Tabit recorded 37 assists and 10 digs. 
  • Freshman Maria Vukaj added 8 kills with 14 digs. 
  • Abbie Toland led the defense with 16 digs.

The Cardinals will return home to take on new conference members, Wisc. - Parkside on Friday (Sept. 28) at 7 p.m. in Hamilton Gymnasium. Last matchup between the two teams went to five in the Cardinals favor. Live stats and video will be available.
