Huskies defeat Cardinals by 6-1 count in GLIAC matchup

HOUGHTON -- The Saginaw Valley State University Women's Tennis team dropped their Sunday GLIAC match at Michigan Tech by a 6-1 score. The Cardinals got their lone point in a three-set win by Joanne Gao at the #2 singles spot versus the Huskies.

With the defeat, SVSU is now 2-4 overall and 2-4 in the GLIAC while the Huskies improve to 4-1 overall and 4-1 in league play

Doubles

Michigan Tech swept through doubles action, going 3-0 to claim that point and the 1-0 lead over Saginaw Valley. Maddie Miller and Taylor McLaughlin fell in a tight matchup at #1 doubles by a 7-5 score. Adiya Young and Nicole Johnson fell 6-4 at the #3 slot while Joanne Gao and Gyselle Daza Gutierrez fell 6-0 at #2. 

Singles

Gao was victorious at #2 singles, playing in a three-set match and winning over her Husky opponent. She took set one 7-5 before falling 6-4 as the matchup was tied 1-1. She came through with a 10-7 win in the thid set, sealing the lone point for the Cards. Miller fell 6-4, 6-1 at the #1 spot and McLaughlin lost 6-0, 6-1 at #3. Gutierrez dropped her #4 singles matchup 6-2, 7-6, Sara Neves fell 6-3, 6-3 at #5 and Johnson lost 6-2, 6-3 at the #6 position.

SVSU has a pair of matches this upcoming weekend, beginning on Saturday (Oct. 12) with a match versus Ashland University. First serve is set for 11:00 a.m. at the SVSU Tennis Complex.
