Cards battle Dragons but fall 5-2 in regional action

MIDLAND -- The Saginaw Valley State University Women's Tennis team hosted the Tiffin University Dragons on Sunday (Mar. 17) in regional action. After SVSU claimed the doubles point, the Dragons were able to pick up a few victories in singles play and closed-out for a 5-2 victory at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.

Doubles

Maddie Miller teamed-up with Joanne Gao to claim a 6-0 sweep at the #1 position. Taylor McLaughlin and Nicole Johnson then posted a 6-4 win at the #2 slot, giving the Cardinals the single point for doubles. 

Singles

With Saginaw Valley not having players at the #5 and #6 spots, Tiffin held a 2-1 lead without any matches in play yet. Miller registered a three-set win at #1 singles, bouncing back for wins of 6-4 and 12-10 after dropping the opener 6-2. 

McLaughlin had a tough loss at #3, winning the first set 7-5 before falling 7-6 in a tiebreaker for set two and 10-3 in the third. Gao was involved in a three-set battle as well, taking the first 6-3 before dropping the second and third 6-4, 10-2. 

Johnson dropped her matchup at the #4 spot by scores of 6-1, 6-1.

SVSU rounds-out the 2018-19 season on April 6 at Hillsdale. First serve will be 1:00 p.m. versus the Chargers.
