Cardinals defeat Screaming Eagles 4-2 on spring trip

COCOA BEACH, Fla. -- The SVSU Women's Tennis team continued play on Wednesday (Mar. 6) on its 2019 spring trip, facing the University of Southern Indiana at the Cocoa Beach Racquet Club. With both teams facing limited lineup options due to injury, the Cardinals held on and claimed all four of the singles matches played to claim a 4-2 victory.

Doubles

After giving up the #3 spot due to default, the Cardinals got a nice 6-3 victory at #2 from Taylor McLaughlin and Nicole Johnson. Southern Indiana, however, would claim a tight 6-4 victory at the #1 spot over Maddie Miller and Joanne Gao to earn the doubles point.

Singles

Neither team had a player at the #6 singles spot, so that match wouldn't count towards USI or SVSU's team total. USI did receive a point at the #5 singles spot by default, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

From there, the Cardinals would continue to play great tennis and win the remaining singles matchups yet to be played.

Miller defeated her opponent at #1 singles by a final score of 6-0, 6-3 and she was followed by Johnson, who posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the #4 slot. Gao had straight 6-4, 6-4 victories in her sets to give Saginaw Valley the 3-2 advantage heading into the final match of the day.

In that #3 singles competition, McLaughlin dropped her first set by a 6-3 score, but responded nicely to close-out the win for the Cards with second and third sets of 6-1, 6-1, respectively.
