Women's Tennis drops regional matchup to Walsh, 6-1
MIDLAND -- The Cardinal Women's Tennis team hosted the Walsh University Cavaliers on Sunday (Feb. 17) evening at the Greater Midland Tennis Center. The Cavaliers would eventually come away with the 6-1 victory after some great battles throughout the match.

Doubles

Walsh got the default win on court 3 and ultimately won the doubles point after also taking the #1 doubles court 6-3. The #2 doubles match was a back and forth battle with SVSU claiming a close 7-5 victory.

Singles

Going into singles the Cardinals were down 0-2 due to the default at 6 singles. With five matches to play, every court would be important.

SVSU came out firing in singles and #1-3 each fought to take their first sets 6-4. At the 4 and 5 spots we came up just short in the first sets with Maya Campbell losing in a tiebreaker 7-6 and Nicole with a 6-4 score.

Just when it appeared SVSU had created some momentum Walsh players fought back and forced the top three courts to 3rd set tiebreakers to decide the match. Joanne Gao was able to earn the win at #2 in the deciding tiebreaker 10-5, while Maddie Miller and Taylor McLaughlin each narrowly lost 10-8 and 12-10 respectively.

Walsh would close out the wins in straight sets at 4 and 5 singles to win the team match 6-1.

From Head Coach Jenn Boehm

"I was impressed by the level of competitiveness from both teams tonight. It was a very even match and they simply pulled out a few more of the close ones. Obviously playing with five players is a bit of a disadvantage but it really didn't affect our mentality on the court today. We went "all in" on each court and these ladies showed a lot of heart and perseverance. The team energy was awesome, especially during singles when that has been a challenge in the past. It was also an improvement over last week's opening match which means we are trending in the right direction and that's exciting."
