Cardinals Round-out fall with 4-3 GLIAC Tourney Victory Over Ashland

MIDLAND -- The Saginaw Valley State University Women's Tennis team rounded-out the fall season with a stellar 4-3 win over the Ashland Eagles on Sunday (Oct. 28) in the final round of the GLIAC Tournament.

The Cardinals fought through a disadvantage off the bat to take the doubles matches at the top two spots, as Maddie Miller and Gyselle Daza Gutierrez took their match at #1 6-3 and Joanne Gao teamed-up with Maya Campbell for a 6-1 win at #2. That gave the Cards a 1-0 lead heading into singles action.

In singles, Miller rolled to a 6-2, 6-3 win at the #1 spot while Joanne Gao was also victorious at the #2 position, defeating her opponent in three sets. She dropped the first frame 2-6 before coming back strong with 6-2 wins in the second and third sets, respectively.

The Eagles got victories at the #4 through #6 positions, including a win by default, to set up a dramatic finish for the contest.

Maya Campbell came through in the clutch for the Cardinals, however, sealing a victory at the #3 singles spot in the team's fourth three-set match of the morning. She won her contest by a 6-0, 6-7, 6-4 margin.
