UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Saginaw Valley State University Women's Tennis team hosted the Michigan Tech Huskies in a league matchup on Saturday afternoon. After claiming two of the three doubles matches for the doubles point, Tech swept through singles and claimed a 6-1 victory over the Cardinals.
The Cardinals won by a 6-3 count at No. 3 doubles, as the duo of Taylor McLaughlin and Nicole Johnson defeated their opponents 6-3.
After the Cards lost at No. 1 doubles, Joanne Gao and Maya Campbell faced a tough battle and were down 5-2 in their match. They stormed back, winning-out to post the 7-5 decision to seal the doubles point for SV.
Campbell and Johnson lost in close three-set battles in their singles matches, with Campbell falling 3-6, 6-1, 5-7 at No. 4 and Johnson dropping her contest at No. 6, 4-6, 6-4, 2-6.
Gyselle Daza Gutierrez battled at No. 3 singles as well, falling in two close sets by scores of 7-6 and 6-4.
From Head Coach Jenn Boehm
"Going into today's match we knew this was going to be a battle. We have always had close matches with Michigan Tech that come down to the wire. This year they have clearly improved overall and there was some great tennis played on every court. The 6-1 team score doesn't do justice to the effort from our team today. We just simply came up short in some key singles matchups. Everyone fought until the end and we left with our heads up.
The major highlight came in doubles after splitting the #1 and 3 spots it came down to #2 doubles. Maya and Joanne rallied back from a 2-5 score to come out with the win 7-5. That was huge and showed great tenacity on their part.
We will look to build on today with another strong performance tomorrow vs LSSU."
