Michael O'Neill concluded his eighth season as the head coach of the SVSU women's soccer program in the fall of 2021.

The Fall 2021 campaign was a historic one for the Cardinals and Coach O'Neill. SVSU finished the year with a record of 14-6-3, setting a new program record for wins in a season. The Cardinals advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in their history before falling to eventual national champion Grand Valley State University. It was the first time the Cardinals ever played during the month of December. SVSU began their NCAA Tournament run by defeating GLIAC rival Ferris State University in a penalty shootout, the Cardinals had just lost to the Bulldogs a week earlier in the GLIAC Semifinals. In the second round against Drury University, SVSU defeated the Panthers in overtime thanks to a free kick goal by Gabby Green. SVSU then traveled to Allendale, Mich. to face the top-seeded Lakers in the Midwest Regional Final and gave GVSU all they could handle before falling 2-0. 

The Cardinals had six players earn All-GLIAC honors, led by Stephanie Strong. She was named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year and earned First Team All-GLIAC after setting a single-season program record with 14 goals scored. Olivia Argeros was named the GLIAC Goalkeeper of the Year and First Team All-GLIAC after setting a program single-season record with 13 shutouts. The senior also recorded 99 saves and played every possible minute in net for the Cardinals during the season. 

Earning Second Team All-GLIAC honors under O'Neill was Amy Babon, Casey Rice, and Reegan Kingpavong, while Zo Schultz was named Honorable Mention All-GLIAC. 

Additionally the Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association named Argeros, Strong, and Babon Second Team All-Midwest Region after their stellar season, while the United Soccer Coaches named Strong All-Region First Team and Kingpavong to the Second Team. 

During the 2021 spring season, SVSU posted a 2-7 record. Highlights included a 4-1 victory on Senior Day over Purdue Northwest. The Cardinals would fall in the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals to Ferris State. Alyssa Watts earned an Honorable Mention All-GLIAC award for her efforts on the field. 

In 2019, Saginaw Valley posted a 12-7 overall record, sealing a trip to the GLIAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed. The Cardinals advanced to the title match of the tournament. Molly Vanderhoff and Sakura Bals each earned All-GLIAC Second Team honors while Autumn Kloha was named to the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention squad.

In 2018, O'Neill led the Cardinals to the program's third NCAA Division II Tournament and the second for him as the head coach. SVSU posted a 12-4-4 overall record and a 5-2-2 mark in the GLIAC. Molly Vanderhoff and Valentina Giambanco were named All-GLIAC First Team while Jennifer Muana earned Second Team honors and Lindsay Stroebel was named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention. Vanderhoff and Giambanco both earned All-Midwest Region honors from the D2CCA and United Soccer Coaches as well. Vanderhoff was named as a United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American. 

During the 2017 season, the Cardinals posted a 10-7-2 overal record and a record of 4-4-1 in the GLIAC. Sophomore Molly Vanderhoff earned First-Team All-GLIAC and All-Midwest Region honors in the midfield. Sophomore Jen Muana earned Second-Team All-GLIAC, D2CCA All-American, and All-Midwest Region honors as a defender. Junior Mallory Hestwood earned Honorable Mention All-GLIAC honors as a midfielder. The Cardianals earned a bid to the GLIAC tournament and earned their way to the championship game before falling to Grand Valley. 

In 2016, the Cardinals had an overall record of 10-7-1 and a 4-6-1 record in the GLIAC. Senior Ashley Henderson was selected to the Second-Team All-GLIAC Team for the third stright year. Senior defender Bria Spraggins earned Second-Team All-GLIAC honors as well as NSCAA All-Midwest Region Three honors. Defender Jen Muana earned All-GLIAC Honrable mention honors as a freshman. 

In the 2015 season, the team tallied an overall record of 6-10 and 4-8 in the GLIAC. Senior Presley Tibbets was named All-GLIAC First Team, junior Ashley Henderson earned All-GLIAC Second Team and freshman Samantha Dunn was named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention.

In his first year at the helm of the program, the Lady Cardinals posted an overall record of 11-4-3, advancing to the second NCAA Playoff appearance in program history. In the first round matchup, SVSU claimed its first ever NCAA Playoff victory in a 2-1 victory over Ohio Dominican. Claire Spleth and Presley Tibbetts were named all-region and First Team All-GLIAC, with Spleth being named the GLIAC "Goalkeeper of the Year." Ashley Henderson and Shelby Thompson earned Second Team All-GLIAC plaudits as well. 

O'Neill has spent two seasons (2012-13) as the Men's Soccer Assistant Coach, where he has helped the program flourish.  In 2013, the Cardinals qualified for the GLIAC Tournament, losing in the championship match in double-overtime to Ohio Dominican.

The 2012 SVSU men's soccer team enjoyed a historic trip to the NCAA DII National Championship game for the first time in school history. SVSU set school records for both wins in a season (18) and at home (10) as they claimed their second straight GLIAC Championship and NCAA Tournament apperance. Seven Cardinals earned All-GLIAC honors including Zach Myers who was named Player of the Year. Four players also earned NSCAA All-Region honors; Lachlan Savage, Michael Lamb, Jason Wise and Zach Myers, while Myers and Wise also earned All-Academic honors as well from the NSCAA. Zach Myers and Jason Wise also became the first two players in program history to be named All-Americans, with Myers earning both Daktronics Inc. and NSCAA honors and Wise earning NSCAA honors. Myers would also be named a Capital One Academic All-American and the 2012 NSCAA National "Player of the Year."  

O'Neill graduated from Tiffin in 2012 with a bachelors degree in Sport and Recreation Management excelling academically as he was selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Academic All-American team.

O'Neill hails from Luton, England and joins SVSU after holding the title of Director of Coaching at Perrysburg Impact Soccer in Ohio.
