Lady Cardinals fall in close overtime match at top-ranked GVSU

ALLENDALE -- In a matchup of top-25 teams in the nation, the No. 21 SVSU Women's Soccer squad traveled to play top-ranked Grand Valley State on Friday night. In what was a tight match that could have gone either way towards the end of regulation, the Lakers came away with a 2-1 victory after a goal midway through the first overtime session.

The Cardinals fall to 9-2-2 overall on the season and 3-1-1 in the GLIAC while GVSU is now 13-0-1 and 5-0-0 in the league.

Grand Valley scored early in the contest to take a 1-0 lead as Sydney O'Donnell found the back of the net just over a minute into action.

SVSU's defense held strong throughout the rest of the half, however, and took the game into halftime trailing by only the single goal.

The visitors were impressive in the second half as well, continuing to get scoring opportunities and hold GV scoreless.

Lindsay Stroebel would score a goal in the 68th minute, using a feed from Mallory Hestwood off a cross to tie the score at 1-1.

Regulation would end with that same 1-1 score. The Lakers got 17 shots off in the 90-minute regulation period while the Cardinals posted 10.

It was all GV in the overtime period, as the Lakers had six shots to the Cardinals' zero. Ava Cook scored the game-winner for the home team off a cross pass, giving the Lakers the 2-1 victory.
