Lady Cards fall to #10 Ashland, 99-84

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Cardinal Women's Basketball team hosted the No. 10 team in the country on Saturday (Feb. 23) in the Ashland University Eagles. After pulling within a single point of the visitors in the third quarter, the Eagles proved to be too much in the end and would eventually claim a 15-point victory by a final score of 99-84.

Saginaw Valley falls to 6-20 overall on the season and 6-13 in the GLIAC while the Eagles improve to 25-2 and 17-2 in the league. 

Both teams had a solid offensive first quarter but the visitors carried a 31-20 lead heading into the second. They would get outscored by SVSU 25-24 in the second quarter but still led at the halftime break by a 55-45 count. 

The Cardinals outscored Ashland once again in the third, using a 25-18 advantage to trim the deficit to 73-70 after three quarters. SV got the game within a single point at 63-62 after a Kyndall Spires layup and a triple from Maddie Barrie

In the fourth quarter, however, the Eagles shot 57.1% from the floor and outscored SVSU 26-14 and secured the 99-84 win.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Aaliah Hill was named the Meijer "Player of the Game" after going for a career-high 23 points in the game. That game-high was joined by seven rebounds and four assists for her. 
  • Hannah Settingsgaard added 16 points with three assists, two boards and a steal in the final home game of her career.
  • Barrie hit four triples and had 12 points with three rebounds.
  • Maddie Maloney added 11 points with five helpers, three boards and a steal.
  • AU shot 58.2% for the game while SV was at 46.6%
  • The Eagles had a 58-44 edge in the paint and 43-29 lead on the glass.

SVSU rounds-out the 2018-19 season on the road at Northwood University on Thursday (Feb. 28) night. Tip-off will be 6:00 p.m. at NU's Riepma Arena.
