#12 Lakers hand Lady Cardinals defeat in league action

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Saginaw Valley State University Women's Basketball squad began its four-game home stand by hosting the No. 12 team in the country and GLIAC-leading Grand Valley State University Lakers. After falling behind by 17 in the first quarter, the Cardinals weren't able to bounce back and would drop an 84-54 contest to the Lakers at SVSU's O'Neill Arena.

Grand Valley improves to 22-2 overall on the season and 15-1 in the GLIAC while Saginaw Valley falls to 4-19 and 4-12 in league play.

The visitors led by 17 after the first quarter, holding a 24-7 advantage over SVSU. GV then posted an 18-15 edge in the next 10 minutes of play, carrying a 42-22 lead into the halftime break.

The Lakers continued to own the pace of play in the second half, outscoring the home squad 42-32 in the final two quarters of actoin to close-out for the 30-point victory of 85-54.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Hannah Settingsgaard had a team-high 14 points for SV, adding three reboudns, three assists and a steal.
  • Kyndall Spires chipped-in with eight points and five boards, adding three helpers. She was named the Meijer "Player of the Game" after her career-high of eight points.
  • Maddie Barrie added eight points and six boards with two assists.
  • Ashley Buchholz hit a pair of triples for six points while Mariah Cook had five points and five boards.
  • Cassidy Boensch had 38 points and 23 rebounds for the visiting Lakers, helping them to a 56-22 edge in points in the paint.
  • The Lakers outrebounded the Cardinals by a 57-36 margin.

Saginaw Valley hosts Davenport on Saturday (Feb. 16) afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. tip-off. The Panthers lost to Northwood on Thursday night, 68-59. Halftime of the game will feature SVSU's annual Breast Cancer Awareness / Survivor event, where survivors will be honored.
