UNIVERSITY CENTER — The SVSU Women's Basketball team finished the weekend with a loss to GLIAC member Grand Valley State Saturday (Jan. 6) afternoon. The Cardinals battled in the first ten minutes of action to tighten the score up 20-17 before the Lakers outscored SVSU 50-31 in the final three quarters to finish off the night with a victory, 70-48.
Hannah Settingsgaard opened the first quarter for the Cardinals, shooting 2-for-2 in triples and led the team with eight points. The Cardinals completed the first ten minutes of the contest hitting all three attempted three pointers and trailed the Lakers, 20-17.
Abby Duffy's layup at the 8:40 mark in the second quarter puts SVSU down by one, 20-19. The Lakers responded to the SVSU bucket by going on an going on an 11 point run against the Cardinals (30-19) with 3:29 to go in the half.
Grand Valley then went onto extend their lead to 14 (37-23) at the half way point. SVSU headed into the locker room with Settingsgaard leading in points with eight and Duffy in boards with three and assists with two. Duffy added in seven points, as well.
After Settingsgaard's bucket sent her into double-digits with 6:07 to go in the third, Saginaw Valley posts an eight-point run over the Lakers to shorten their deficit to nine (41-32) going into a media timeout with 4:51 left in the quarter.
GVSU responded with an 11 point run to push their lead to 52-32 with 1:22 left in the third. Freshman Laurel Jacqmain contributed defensively for the Cardinals, adding the team high of three steals.
With a bucket from Duffy and two good free throws from the Lakers, the Cardinals went into the final 10 minutes trailing 54-34.
The Lakers went on to post their largest lead of the night of 24 with 6:52 remaining in the contest. Even with Saginaw Valley fighting back and posting 14 points in the final minutes, the Cardinals fell to Grand Valley State, 70-48.
Inside the Box Score:
- Settingsgaard led the Cardinals with 14 points, going 4-for-4 in free throws, earning herself "Meijer" player of the game honors. She added one assist, as well.
- Duffy followed with 10 points and led in assists with two.
- Kierra Crockett and Duffy tied up the team high with four boards each.
- Katie Schultz notched four points going 2-for-2 in the field.
- Jacqmain posted three steals against the Lakers. She added four points and three rebounds, as well.

"I thought we played with great effort today. Unfortunately, we played a team that does a great job of making you feel uncomfortable on the offensive end and they were able to speed us up a little bit, which caused some turnovers and rushed shots. At the end of the day, you have to make shots and we just didn't do that. As we continue to go forward in conference play, we will have to find a way to consistently attack and execute at the same time. But if we will continue to ramp up our competitive level, it will all come together for us!"

The Cardinals will continue on the road against Wayne State on Thursday (Jan. 11) night. The Warriors are coming off a 76-43 win over Lake Superior State over the weekend. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. in the Matthaei Center.
