ROLLA, Mo. - The SVSU women's basketball team claimed its second consecutive win of the 2015-16 season after defeating the Missouri S&T Miners by a score of 61-47.

SVSU got game-highs of 17 points and seven rebounds from Emily Wending in the effort and a  season-high 11 points from Grace Whelan against the Miners.

The Cards ran out to a 19-10 lead after the first quarter after a three-point play from freshman forward Halee Nieman. 

SVSU carried a 33-21 edge into halftime after out-scoring the Miners by a 14-11 mark in the second frame. Whelan had a big quarter for SV, scoring seven of her 11 points in the second period.

Saginaw Valley would continue to out-score the home team in the third quarter by an 18-13 mark and would overcome a 13-10 deficit in the fourth to close out for the victory, 61-47.

• Whelan had a season-high for SVSU, scoring 11 points, grabbing four rebounds and adding three assists.
• Wending had 17 points with eight boards, an assist and steal for SV.
• Nieman continued her solid play, adding nine points with a pair of rebounds. The nine points tied her career-high she set last night against Lemoyne-Owen.
• Alex Green chipped-in with seven points and five rebounds, as did Danielle Carriere with seven points of her own.
• SVSU shot 45.3% (24-53) from the floor in the contest and had the largest lead of 23 points with 4:37 left to play in the third quarter.

Whelan earned Meijer "Player of the Game" honors for there season-best 11 points off the bench for the Lady Cardinals.

"This was a very good regional win for us and an extremely solid defensive effort for 40 minutes. We were able to overcome some major foul trouble in the first half with some huge minutes from Grace Whelan, who was able to be an inside presence on both ends of the floor. Overall, we got two wins this weekend that we needed and we're continuing to learn what it takes to win games at this level."

Saginaw Valley returns to the court on Saturday, November 28th, when the Lady Cardinals travel to play at the University of Purdue-Calumet in a non-league tilt. Tip-off will be 2:00 p.m. for the contest.
