SVSU Women's Basketball 'Get to Know': Grace Whelan

UNIVERSITY CENTER, MI – Throughout the 2013-14 year, svsucardinals.com will continue to profile one member from the women's basketball team each month in a "Get to Know" segment.

The Lady Cardinals will have a chance to reflect on their time at SVSU, why they chose to come to school here and what their teammates and coaches mean to them. By doing so, fans have an opportunity to get a glimpse into each team member's background and personality. The first player to be highlighted is freshman, Grace Whelan.

A standout student-athlete at East Lansing High School, Whelan earned four varsity letters, one state championship, three regional championships and three district championships in basketball alone. Whelan has also garnered awards for All-Academic, All-Area, participated in the MI/OH Border Battle and was a member of the MGBR Elite program. She is proud daughter to Steve and Sallie Whelan.

Below are a few comments from Head Coach, Jamie Pewinski, about Grace Whelan:

"Gracie has put in a lot of hard work this summer and is going to make an impact on this program in just her first year! She has fit in perfectly with every player on the roster and exudes all the qualities a coach wants in an athlete as we try to build a program that can compete in a tough GLIAC conference. Her attitude and work ethic are contagious and she is only going to improve as the year goes on and she gets a better understanding of the system and how well her skill set fits in!"

What is your favorite part of SVSU's campus?

Definitely have to say that my favorite part of campus is the Student Life Center. Great place to chill out!

If you could meet one person in your lifetime, who would it be?

Taylor Swift…I love her!

What is your favorite movie?

Lion King…hands down, no questions asked.

What is your favorite food?

Well…I would probably have to say chocolate covered strawberries. It's kind of random, but my favorite.

Who is your greatest inspiration and why?

My dad is my greatest inspiration because he is the hardest worker I've ever come across and he is the BEST role model for me!

What has been the biggest adjustment since being at SVSU?

I'm only about a week and half into it, but I would say the biggest adjustment for me is organizing my time with classes, basketball, and meeting people. They say college is all about time management and I would have to agree with that statement.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I really enjoy sleeping! I also would have to say that I like to hang out with my friends in my free time too.

What is your career ambition?

That one is in the air still, but I know that it will come and I have a lot of interests so I'm not worried about it. I want to be successful and make my family proud!

What are you looking forward to most this year?

This one is easy…the basketball season! I am really excited about getting started with our season.
