SVSU Women's Basketball 'Get to Know': Sam Zirzow

SVSU Women's Basketball 'Get to Know': Sam Zirzow

UNIVERSITY CENTER, MI – Next up for the SVSU Women's Basketball "Get to Know" segment is sophomore forward, Samantha Zirzow. A native of Goodrich, MI, she is coming off a great freshman campaign for the Cardinals and the expectations are even higher for her with the 2012-2013 season.

Last year, Zirzow started 25 games, averaged 29.3 minutes per contest and 9.1 points. She also posted 111 rebounds and was second on the team with 34 steals.

Below are a few comments from Head Coach, Jamie Pewinski, about Sam Zirzow:

"Sam has been consistently one of the hardest working players on our team since she arrived on campus as a freshman. With so many newcomers on our team this year, we are often referring to Sam as one of those players you want to emulate; she is a great role model for all of them. There's no doubt she had a great offseason and our hope is that will carry over into a successful sophomore year for her."

Here's what Sam had to say about the upcoming season and her WBB teammates:

"Being a sophomore this year, there is no doubt that changes have been from last year to this season. I'm so excited to see what this year has in store for us. For me personally, I will be happy as long as we improve on and off the court and so far we are definitely headed in that direction. My teammates are amazing girls; we get along so well and are always laughing at each other. There's never a dull moment on our team that's for sure. I can't wait until we hit the road for games; I'm sure we will have some memorable times. Go Cards and I hope to see everyone at some of our games this season."

What is your favorite part of SVSU's campus?

My favorite part of the campus is probably the new Student REC Center. I spend a lot of my time there! It's brand new, clean and everything you need is there (basketball hoops, workout equipment, couches, televisions, music, etc.)

If you could meet one person in your lifetime, who would it be?

Rajon Rondo…he is my all-time favorite basketball player

Who is the best singer on the team?

Briana and Kayla...if Justin Bieber is playing, Kayla is singing.

What is your favorite movie?

I love movies so it's hard just to choose one! If I have to pick one, I would say my favorite is "Think Like a Man". Kevin Hart is hilarious and there are a lot of other great actors in it!

What is your favorite food?

Anything that has pasta in it!!! Olive Garden is the greatest (thanks Coach Pewinski & Coach Thrun for the pre-game meals from that place)

What is the best part about road trips with the WBB team?

That's a hard one…I would probably say the best part of road trips are all the different kinds of restaurants that we go to. There were so many awesome restaurants last year we went to that I haven't eaten at before. Coach P has some pretty good choices in her restaurants!!!

Who is your greatest inspiration and why?

My parents…I'm an only child so my parents have taught me everything…they are both so hard working and goal driven. I try to emulate the things they do in my own life. I'm, no doubt, where I am at today because of the things they've done for me and I can't thank them more for that.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I love to shop…I'm actually kind of obsessed with TJ Maxx because they have some nice stuff, but it's cheap :)

What is your career ambition?

I am a Social Work major and a Youth Service Minor. As of right now I am heading in the direction of child neglect and family problems. My career goal is to help people and create a healthy environment for them to live in
